17 Organizations Receive Google Funding for AI-Driven Science

AI Powers Scientific Discovery with $36 Million Google Investment

Seventeen organizations across the globe have been selected to receive a combined $36 million in funding from Google.org's Impact Challenge: AI for Science. Announced on October 14, 2026, the initiative aims to accelerate scientific discovery by leveraging artificial intelligence to tackle complex global challenges.

Diverse Projects Across Science Disciplines

The selected recipients, chosen from applications across 30 countries, will focus on critical areas including climate, health, and foundational science. Organizations have the option to participate in a six-month Google.org Accelerator program, which offers engineering support, technical mentorship, and access to Google infrastructure to help scale their innovative solutions.

Advancing Health and Climate Research

In the health and life sciences sector, recipients include the AITHYRA Research Institute, collaborating with EPFL, to explore virus-cell interactions and develop AI-designed protein libraries for previously undruggable targets. The Allen Institute is working on designing DNA sequences to better understand neurodegenerative diseases, committing to open-source sharing of all its models and results. The University of Cape Town (UCT) received $1.6 million to develop an AI platform that maps genetic variants affecting drug metabolism in African patients, aiming to improve treatment decisions for diverse populations.

For climate resilience and environmental science, the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) was awarded $2.35 million. Researchers there will use AI to enhance climate models and guide new ocean observations. This project, led by researchers from UC San Diego’s Halıcıoğlu School of Data Science and Scripps Institution of Oceanography, seeks to improve the representation of complex climate processes by learning from data and identifying key areas for future ocean measurements.

Transforming Research with AI

Maggie Johnson, Global Head and VP of Google.org, highlighted the initiative's role in a significant inflection point for scientific discovery, where AI is being applied to everything from understanding human disease to forecasting environmental changes. The funding and support aim to enable these organizations to address global issues more effectively and improve lives worldwide.
