UFC Extends Cleveland Clinic Brain Health Partnership

UFC announced Thursday the extension of its partnership with Cleveland Clinic to continue support for the Professional Athletes Brain Health Study through 2030. The agreement includes a new $1 million contribution from UFC to Cleveland Clinic’s Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas. WWE and Zuffa Boxing will also join the effort through athlete participation and financial support, as both entities are part of TKO Group Holdings alongside UFC.

Longstanding Collaboration Continues

This renewed commitment extends the partnership into its third decade, with UFC first joining the study in 2011. The promotion has now committed over $3 million across four funding rounds. The research, originally established to examine the cumulative effects of concussive and subconcussive impacts on professional fighters, has expanded its scope to include athletes from other sports involving repetitive head impacts.

Study Scope and Participation

The Professional Athletes Brain Health Study, led by Dr. Charles Bernick, is the largest study focused on professional athletes exposed to repetitive head trauma. More than 900 active and retired athletes have enrolled in the voluntary study, which provides ongoing assessments of brain health and function, including annual magnetic resonance imaging scans. This long-term tracking is crucial for studying conditions like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Impact on TKO Group Holdings

The expanded partnership reinforces TKO Group Holdings' commitment to athlete welfare and risk management. While the direct impact on near-term financial numbers is expected to be limited, the investment in brain health research is seen as a factor in the long-term viability of its combat sports portfolio.
