BigBear.ai Eyes Defense Tech Growth Amid AI Push

BigBear.ai Holdings, Inc. (BBAI) is positioning itself to capitalize on the growing investments in defense modernization, autonomous systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) for national security. The company is expanding its footprint in military and intelligence applications through its Ask Sage generative AI platform and ConductorOS autonomous systems software.

Defense AI Adoption Creates Opportunities

The company recently secured a contract with Naval Air Systems Command to support AI applications for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Its Ask Sage platform is designed for secure AI deployment in disconnected environments, crucial for missions involving sensitive information. ConductorOS, another key offering, enables operators to coordinate multiple drones and autonomous systems from various manufacturers, with successful demonstrations during U.S. military exercises highlighting its potential in modern warfare.

Contract Wins and Financial Performance

BigBear.ai reported securing over 20 contracts in the second quarter of 2026, with individual values up to $5 million. The company's backlog increased by 9% from the end of 2025 to $269.6 million. Quarterly revenues saw a 13% year-over-year rise to $36.7 million, and gross margin expanded to 32.8%. Management has reaffirmed its 2026 revenue guidance of $135 million to $165 million. With $409.8 million in cash and investments, BigBear.ai has financial flexibility for strategic acquisitions and product development.

Challenges in Profitability

Despite revenue improvements, BigBear.ai reported a net loss of $25.7 million for the quarter, and adjusted EBITDA losses widened to $11.6 million. Concerns remain regarding negative operating cash flow, rising expenses, and uncertainties inherent in government contracts. While BigBear.ai appears well-positioned to benefit from defense AI investments, sustained contract execution and progress toward profitability will be critical for long-term shareholder value.

Competitive Landscape

Rival Palantir Technologies (PLTR) is also strengthening its position in defense technology with its Artificial Intelligence Platform and Maven Smart System. Palantir's Maven platform aids military personnel in analyzing battlefield intelligence and improving operational decisions. The Pentagon's designation of Maven as a program of record is seen as strengthening Palantir's long-term government relationships and revenue visibility.
