Christian Awakening Among Uganda's Ancient Batwa Pygmies

For the first time in centuries, a remote African tribe known as the Batwa Pygmies has been introduced to Christianity. The tribe, which traditionally lived off the land and practiced ancient customs, now hears about Jesus for the first time.

Jovanis Nyirakayanje, a member of the Batwa Pygmy tribe, shared his perspective on their previous way of life: “We smoked; we drank; we performed witchcraft. We were devil worshippers.” The Batwa people lived in caves and trees within Bwindi Forest for centuries, hunting with poison-tipped arrows or nets and collecting fruits from the trees.

Impact of Conservation

In 1992, the Ugandan government declared a portion of their forest home as a national park to protect endangered mountain gorillas. This decision forced the Batwa out of their ancestral lands, leaving them homeless and destitute with no land rights or resources.

Missionary Efforts

Tugume Gerald and his wife Barbara moved from Uganda's capital city to Kisoro village near Bwindi Forest to help the displaced Batwa. They began preaching hope to those who felt abandoned by society, leading many Batwa pygmies to embrace Christianity.

Transformational Change

Nyirakayanje was one of the first converts and now shares his faith with fellow tribespeople: “It was the first time anyone had ever told us about Jesus. We were servants of the Devil, but then we heard Christ died for our sins and that changed our lives!” Since then, hundreds have been baptized.

Miracles and Ministries

The Geralds report miracles such as healings among those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Additionally, they run a school for Batwa children and teach farming skills to former hunters. Documentary producer Tino Qahoush has partnered with churches in Sweden to provide aid.
