Four Astronauts Return to Earth After 237 Days

Homecoming After Extended Mission

Four astronauts have successfully returned to Earth after spending 237 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The crew, comprising NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, completed their mission with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Los Angeles on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

A Mission of Science and Support

The Crew-12 mission, which launched on February 13, 2026, from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, was initially tasked with replacing an ailing colleague and his crew. The astronauts conducted extensive scientific research, including investigations into stem cells, crystal growth, and the effects of weightlessness on bone density. They also performed spacewalks to maintain and upgrade the ISS systems. Their research aimed to prepare humans for future missions to the Moon and Mars.

The Journey Home

The return journey began on Wednesday when the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, named Freedom, undocked from the ISS. After a journey of approximately 27 hours, the capsule initiated its re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. The spacecraft's heat shield battled extreme temperatures, reaching up to 3,500 degrees Fahrenheit, during the fiery descent. Drogue parachutes deployed at 11:30 EDT, followed by the main parachutes, leading to a splashdown at 11:34 EDT. The crew was eager to reunite with their families after their lengthy separation, with some looking forward to simple pleasures like feeling the breeze and taking a shower.

Recovery Operations

Teams aboard a recovery ship, supported by fast boats, secured the SpaceX Dragon capsule immediately after splashdown. The recovery ship then hoisted the spacecraft onto its main deck, allowing the astronauts to exit. The mission concluded after traveling more than 100 million miles and completing over 3,792 orbits around Earth.
