iPhone Duo: What Apple’s Foldable Offers and Omits

iPhone Duo Launching Soon

Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, will be available in stores on October 23rd, following pre-orders beginning October 16th. The device features a 7.6-inch screen when unfolded, making it 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Addressing Creasing with Replaceable Layer

Apple has implemented a unique solution to address the visible crease common in foldable displays: a replaceable nano-texture cover layer. According to Apple’s VP of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, this layer can be removed and replaced if it wears down over time. With AppleCare+ coverage, replacement costs $19.

Compromises with the Foldable Design

The iPhone Duo isn't without its compromises. Unlike the iPhone 18 Pro released alongside it, the Duo forgoes FaceID authentication, relying instead on fingerprint and password-based security. It also lacks a dedicated telephoto lens found in the standard model.

Software Innovations

Apple is focusing on software to enhance the foldable experience. The iPhone Duo features animations designed to create a seamless transition between displays as the device unfolds, though replicating this effect on other foldables has proven challenging. Content remains continuous across both screens due to a new display engine.

Durability Considerations

The iPhone Duo is reported to be less durable than traditional iPhones like the 18 Pro. While Apple has worked to improve the longevity of the cover layer, customers may need to replace it over time to maintain optimal screen appearance and functionality.
