The National Basketball Association (NBA) and prominent sportsbooks have reached an agreement to prohibit certain betting markets, a move aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the game. The restrictions, reported on Friday, October 16, 2026, will specifically target bets that have been deemed vulnerable to manipulation.
Key Bets to Be Banned
According to reports citing a league memo, the NBA has instructed its authorized gaming operators, including DraftKings and FanDuel, to cease offering wagers on the opening tip-off and on players missing specific shots. Additionally, bets on the 'under' for players projected to play fewer than 12 minutes in a game will be banned. Parlay bets that combine 'under' outcomes for multiple statistics of the same player are also included in the prohibition.
Addressing Gambling Concerns
This decision comes in the wake of several high-profile gambling scandals involving NBA players, such as Jontay Porter and Terry Rozier, who were implicated in manipulating 'under' bets. These incidents have intensified scrutiny on player prop bets. The new rules build upon measures implemented in the previous season, which included restrictions on bets involving players on 10-day or two-way contracts, as well as props related to turnovers, fouls, and missed free throws.
Maintaining Game Integrity
A spokesperson for DraftKings stated that the company supports the NBA's initiative and is committed to ongoing collaboration to maintain game integrity through appropriate market limits. NBA executive vice president Scott Kaufman-Ross emphasized the league's goal to strike a balance between removing problematic bet types and preventing a shift of activity to the illegal market.
