Windows Search Rebuilt for Task Completion

Windows Search Gets a Major Overhaul

Microsoft is rebuilding Windows Search with the goal of enabling users to do things directly from the search bar, rather than simply finding files or apps. The company began rolling out the redesigned experience to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel on October 7, 2026.

From Listing to Doing

The updated Search interface focuses on ‘inline actions’ allowing users to type commands like “switch to dark mode,” or “turn on Bluetooth” and have those tasks completed immediately. Workspace commands such as minimizing all windows, or arranging them on screen are also available.

WinUI 3 Foundation & Improved Performance

The rebuild is based on the WinUI 3 framework, which Microsoft claims delivers substantial improvements in performance and memory usage. The previous two-pane layout has been replaced with a single column for results, streamlining the user experience. Initial testing indicates that the new design improves search speed.

AI Integration & Hybrid Intelligence

Microsoft is also integrating AI more deeply into Windows through a strategy called ‘Hybrid Intelligence.’ This allows Copilot to access local files and perform multi-step tasks, reducing reliance on cloud processing. For example, the system can gather requested documents, compress them, and draft an email with attachments.

Enhanced Language Understanding

The new Windows Search is also more forgiving when it comes to typos and synonyms, with Microsoft promising further refinements in the coming weeks. The initial release supports only the English language.
