Atrium Health Invests $340M in Behavioral Healthcare

Atrium Health is launching a $340 million, five-year initiative to significantly expand its behavioral healthcare services, addressing a growing need across the region. The commitment, announced on October 15, 2026, is one of the largest investments in behavioral health services in the area's history and aims to increase capacity, improve access to care, and support workforce development.

New Behavioral Health Hospital Planned

A central component of the investment is the creation of a new dedicated behavioral health hospital in north Charlotte's University City area. Atrium Health will renovate an existing building near Mallard Creek for this facility, which is expected to house 168 inpatient beds for both pediatric and adult patients. This will represent a net gain of 102 beds for the community. The hospital will offer specialized treatments, including procedural and device-based therapies for adults whose conditions have not responded to traditional methods, alongside comprehensive outpatient services such as therapy and medication management.

Expanded Services and Crisis Care

The investment also includes the development of a new behavioral health emergency department and an expanded crisis stabilization unit. These facilities will provide crucial short-term inpatient care for individuals experiencing acute mental health or substance use crises. By repurposing an existing building, Atrium Health anticipates bringing these services online by 2028, approximately 12 to 18 months sooner than a new construction project would allow, enabling a quicker response to urgent needs.

Addressing a Growing Need

Atrium Health, which has served as the region's behavioral health safety-net provider for nearly 40 years, has observed a substantial increase in demand. Behavioral health-related emergency department visits have risen 13% over the past six years, with adolescents and pediatric patients making up a significant portion of these visits. Last year alone, nearly 2,000 pediatric patients received inpatient care, and nearly 20,000 received outpatient care, underscoring the critical need for expanded resources. The new hospital is projected to provide an additional 35,000 inpatient days of care annually.
