Death Toll Surpasses 4,000 as Outbreak Spreads
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has recorded over 8,300 cases of Ebola and nearly 4,018 deaths since May 15, marking the worst outbreak in the country's history. The latest figures were released by DRC’s public health institute on Thursday.
The Bundibugyo strain of the virus is causing this rapid spread, with no known treatment or vaccine available. Health workers face significant challenges as mistrust and violence hinder containment efforts. In Bunia, Ituri Province, protesters demanding unpaid wages for months have disrupted operations further complicating response strategies.
Violence Hampers Response Efforts
A senior U.N. official reported that an Ebola treatment center was burned down by soldiers in Kigonze, forcing 19,000 displaced people to flee their camp. This incident underscores the difficulties faced by front-line workers who have gone on strike several times since the outbreak began due to lack of payment.
Spread Across Eastern Congo
The virus has now spread beyond Ituri Province and reached North Kivu, becoming a new hotspot. Health authorities reported that while transmission appeared to be slowing in parts of Ituri province, it is rapidly increasing elsewhere.
