Google Health and Fitbit Air Receive Key Enhancements
Google is rolling out substantial upgrades to its Google Health app and the Fitbit Air wearable, aiming to provide users with more comprehensive health insights and improved activity tracking. These updates, announced on October 12, 2026, build upon previous feature additions and user feedback.
Expanded Activity Tracking and Health Guardian
A significant improvement comes to automatic activity tracking across Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch models (3, 4, and 5). The number of recognizable workouts has been expanded from 10 to over 100, encompassing activities like strength training, swimming, and various sports. Google states this upgrade nearly doubles the accuracy of detection and reduces missed workouts by more than half, utilizing more contextual reasoning.
Furthermore, the Health Guardian feature, initially introduced for Pixel Watch, is now being extended to Fitbit Air and the new Fitbit Edge for Google Health Premium subscribers. This feature monitors health and wellness signals in the background, providing monthly summaries of key indicators. For Premium subscribers, this includes trends in blood pressure and insulin resistance, as well as sleep breathing quality. The free version of the Google Health app includes irregular heart rhythm notifications and high/low heart rate alerts.
New Wearable and Integrations
Alongside these software enhancements, Google has also expanded its wearable lineup. The Fitbit Air, a screenless tracker, is receiving a new metal mesh band option. The company also introduced the Fitbit Edge, a new wearable positioned between the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch, featuring an OLED display and priced at $179.99. The Fitbit Edge, along with the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch, will work with Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini, which offers personalized workout plans and routines.
Additionally, Google announced a collaboration with Flo Health, a women's health platform. Starting early next year, Flo Health users will be able to sync their app with Google Health, allowing cycle data to connect with metrics like resting heart rate and sleep stages for a more complete health overview.
