Rome Conference Addresses Mental Health Ministry

Mental Health Roundtable Held in Rome

A significant roundtable discussion on mental health took place in Rome on October 9, marking the opening of the conference "A Healing Presence: The Church's Call to Mental Health Ministry." Organized by the Catholic Mental Health Ministers (CMHM), an international association, the event aimed to address the growing importance of mental health in everyday conversations and the challenges people face in relating to those with psychological disorders.

The conference was strategically timed to align with Pope Leo XIV's October prayer intention for mental health ministry and the global observance of World Mental Health Day on October 10. The discussions emphasized that mental vulnerability affects everyone, highlighting the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit, and the Church's role in supporting mental well-being in dialogue with science.

Addressing Stigma and Fostering Support

The event featured two panels of speakers. The first, "Stigma, Welcome, and Safe Spaces," included Archbishop Borys Gudziak, Father Bryan Duggan, psychiatrist Samuelle Falk, and Father Chilton Fernandez. They discussed issues such as loneliness and social isolation, particularly in contexts like Ukraine, where conflict has led to widespread stress and trauma. Archbishop Gudziak noted that while mental health is less taboo, understanding how to address it remains a challenge.

The second panel, "Who Cares for Those Who Care? Building Bridges and Fostering Integration," comprised Thomas Schulze, Wendell Callahan, Sister Grimaneza Guaya, Victor Pereira-Sanchez, and Márcio Gagliat. This session focused on supporting caregivers and integrating mental health care within communities.

Youth Mental Health and Collaboration

Earlier proceedings, held at the Don Luigi Di Liegro International Foundation, included a presentation by psychiatrist Alessandro Vento. He drew attention to the mental health status of Italy's youth, noting an increase in drug use and its potential link to suicides. Vento stressed the need for enhanced collaboration among families, institutions, and associations to better support individuals with mental illness.

Testimonies from caregivers and individuals with lived experience of mental illness were shared, offering insights into concerns and potential solutions. The Don Luigi Di Liegro Foundation also presented its ongoing mental health programs focused on psychosocial rehabilitation and social inclusion.
