Tesla Unveils 'Flying Roadster' with Daring Stunts

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the company's new Roadster on October 15th at a SpaceX testing facility in McGregor, Texas. The vehicle performed a series of dramatic stunts, including driving upside down, barrel-rolling in mid-air, and leaping over other Tesla models. Notably, the car executed these maneuvers without a human driver.

Advanced Propulsion and Performance

According to Tesla, the Roadster's aerial capabilities are enabled by a "fan suction system" on its underside, capable of generating up to two Gs of force. This system, combined with borrowed SpaceX hardware including two carbon-overlay pressure vessels holding approximately 250 kilograms of air, and ten nozzles, allows for levitation and extreme maneuvers. Four rear "thrusters," designed to resemble exhaust tips, are claimed to provide 80 kilonewtons of thrust. Tesla stated that with the thrusters engaged, the car achieved a 0-to-60 mph acceleration in just 0.81 seconds. The company also claims the fan system allows for cornering at over 2g, with selectable high-downforce and low-drag modes, and a variable-pitch rear wing. The car is also specified with a top speed exceeding 230 mph, capacity for two occupants, and drive-by-wire steering and braking systems. Musk indicated this Roadster will be the only manually driven car Tesla produces long-term.

Production and Future

The production of the new Tesla Roadster is not expected to begin until 2028. Pricing details were not discussed during the reveal, though previous reports suggested a price point above $200,000. Musk also commented on the potential legality of the vehicle in various jurisdictions. The demonstration marked a departure from traditional automotive reveals, with the event held at the SpaceX facility rather than a conventional auto show.

Legacy and Context

During the event, Musk also referenced the original Roadster, noting that the first-generation model is still orbiting Mars and Earth. Tesla shared a post on X (formerly Twitter) juxtaposing the 2018 image of the original Roadster in space with the new-generation model, captioned "From Roadster in a rocket. To rocket in a Roadster." The innovative demonstration has drawn attention, including a humorous reaction from Meta AI head Alexandr Wang, who questioned the identity of the driver in the stunt video.
