Christopher Nolan's acclaimed film 'The Odyssey' is set to return to select IMAX and IMAX 70mm screens starting Friday, October 9. This move comes as Tom Cruise's recently released film 'Digger' has experienced a disappointing opening week.
'Digger' Underperforms at Box Office
'Digger', which opened on October 2, garnered approximately $20 million globally in its first week. This figure falls short of Warner Bros.' projections and marks one of the softest openings for Tom Cruise in recent years. The film received a C+ CinemaScore from audiences and has been met with mixed reviews from critics, holding a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
'The Odyssey' Continues Success
In contrast, 'The Odyssey', released on July 17, has been a monumental success. The film has grossed $1.76 billion worldwide, making it Universal's biggest release ever and the highest-grossing R-rated film and IMAX release of all time. Its premium-format run was previously extended to September 30 due to high demand.
Premium Screen Dynamics
The decision to return 'The Odyssey' to IMAX screens is driven by the scarcity and profitability of premium formats. IMAX 70mm, in particular, is available in only about 41 cinemas globally. While 'Digger' occupied these screens, its weaker performance has allowed 'The Odyssey' to reclaim them. Some venues, like London's BFI IMAX, will continue showing 'Digger' alongside 'The Odyssey' until October 15.
Limited Engagement Ahead
The return of 'The Odyssey' to IMAX is expected to be brief, with 'Street Fighter' scheduled to take over IMAX screens on October 16. However, the 70mm screens might offer a longer run for Nolan's film, as the next major IMAX 70mm release, 'Dune: Part Three,' is not slated until December 18.
UAE Screenings
In the UAE, 'Digger' opened on October 1, and 'The Odyssey' is still playing in cinemas, including some IMAX sessions. Local cinema chains have not yet confirmed if they will follow the US schedule for an expanded IMAX return of 'The Odyssey' on October 9.
