Global Call for Lived Experiences in Mental Health Care
On October 10, 2026, World Mental Health Day served as a global platform to raise awareness and advocate for improved mental health support. A central theme, "Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change," underscored the necessity of incorporating the perspectives of individuals with lived experience (PWLE) into the development of mental health services and policies. The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that over 1 billion people worldwide live with a mental health condition, with anxiety and depression being the most common. In the WHO South-East Asia Region alone, an estimated 289 million people live with a mental, neurological, self-harm, or substance use condition, and 208,000 people die by suicide annually.
Self-Care and Collective Responsibility
Under the theme "Care Starts Here," the National Council for Mental Wellbeing emphasized self-care as a vital component of overall wellbeing. This initiative encouraged intentional acts of care to strengthen resilience and foster presence within communities. World Mental Health Day also reinforced the understanding that mental wellbeing is a collective responsibility, creating space for open conversations about the stigma and barriers many face in accessing support.
STEM and Mental Health Innovation
The day also saw a focus on how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) can address mental health challenges. Projects by Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair finalists were highlighted, including research on precision antidepressant tapering using buccal films, aiming to mitigate withdrawal symptoms for individuals with major depressive disorder.
Community and Support Initiatives
Various organizations and public figures marked the day with calls for action and support. In Jordan, the Ministry of Youth and Ministry of Health, in partnership with UNICEF, celebrated World Mental Health Day with the theme “Healthy Minds, Bright Futures,” emphasizing investment in young people's mental health. Prince William of Wales encouraged individuals to reach out to loved ones, stating, "one conversation can change everything," in response to the approximately 20 daily suicide deaths in the UK.
